A wonderful account of St. Guthlac, with whom I was not previously familiar. Thank you for sharing his life with us! I wonder if you could elaborate of the correct pronunciation of his name? Is it just as it appears “guth-lack”?
I tend to say it with the ‘u’ as in ‘bucket’ so more or less how it appears but I notice Anglo-Saxon scholars like George Younge (who spoke at the British Saints conference) say the ‘u’ more like the ‘oo’ in ‘woof’ so ‘Gooth-lack’.
Thank you so much for this account of St Guthlac’s life. Do you know if there is an English translation available of the 8th century account of his Life?
Looks like its time for a "English Thebaid" book.
Christ is risen!
He is Risen Indeed!
Where could one find access to the text of the Akathist to St. Guthlac?
We are planning to make this Akathist, and that to St Withburga, available soon - if possible at the time of the British Saints conference.
That's wonderful to hear!

Fascinating. 🧐
I write an Anglo-Saxon Christianity substack. So this was right up my street 👍🏽

There are several translations available, for example the CUP version by Colgrave. Here's an earlier one that you can find online:
